Short answer: for most Australian small businesses, Tidio is the right starting point, Intercom Fin suits sales-led teams who can justify per-resolution pricing, and Zendesk AI Bot only makes sense if you’re already paying for Zendesk. None of the three is “the best chatbot” — they’re built for different jobs, and picking the wrong one usually means paying for a platform you barely use.

This comparison is written for SMBs, not enterprises. We’ll cover what each tool is genuinely good at, how the pricing models differ (this is where the real differences hide), and how to decide in about five minutes.

Zendesk AI Bot: great ticket deflection — if you’re already on Zendesk

Zendesk’s AI agents are not a standalone chatbot you bolt onto your website. They’re an extension of the Zendesk support suite, and that’s both their strength and their limitation.

What it’s good at. If your support team already lives in Zendesk — tickets, help centre articles, macros — the AI agent is genuinely strong at deflecting repetitive tickets. It answers from your existing help centre, hands over to agents inside the same workflow, and reports deflection rates in the dashboards you already use. For a support-heavy business doing hundreds of tickets a week, it can take real load off the team.

Where it falls short for SMBs. The cost structure assumes you’re an established support operation. You need a Zendesk Suite plan (from around US$55 per agent per month), the more capable AI features sit behind an Advanced AI add-on (around US$50 per agent per month), and automated resolutions are then metered on top — commonly around US$1.50–$2 per resolution on committed volumes. For a five-person business answering 20 emails a week, you’re buying a ticketing empire to get a chatbot.

Verdict: if you’re already paying for Zendesk, turning on its AI agent is usually a no-brainer to trial. If you’re not, don’t start here.

Intercom Fin: the best AI answers, priced per resolution

Intercom’s Fin is probably the strongest out-of-the-box AI answer engine of the three. It’s built on large language models, answers from your help content and past conversations, and is noticeably better than keyword-matching bots at handling messily-worded questions.

What it’s good at. Sales-led chat. Intercom was built around the idea that website chat is a revenue channel, not just a support cost — so Fin is tightly integrated with lead capture, qualification, meeting booking and routing to salespeople. If a meaningful share of your enquiries are pre-sales (“does it work with X?”, “what does it cost?”), Fin handles them well and knows when to pass a hot lead to a human.

The pricing catch. Fin charges roughly US$0.99 per resolution — a resolution being a conversation the AI closes without human help. On top of that you need Intercom platform seats (from around US$29 per seat per month on the entry plan). Per-resolution pricing is honestly aligned in one way — you pay when the AI actually does the work — but it makes monthly cost hard to predict. A business resolving 800 conversations a month with Fin is paying around US$800/month in resolution fees alone, before seats. That can be excellent value against staff time, or an unpleasant surprise, depending on your volumes.

Verdict: strong choice for SaaS and e-commerce businesses where chat drives sales. Run your expected monthly conversation volume through the per-resolution maths before committing.

Tidio: the budget FAQ bot that covers most small business websites

Tidio is the opposite end of the market: a lightweight chat widget you can have on your site this afternoon, with a free tier and paid plans from around US$29 a month. Its AI feature (Lyro) answers from your FAQ content, and the simpler flows handle things like opening hours, booking links and order status.

What it’s good at. The questions that actually fill a small business inbox: hours, pricing, service areas, “do you have availability”, “where’s my order”. For tradies, allied health clinics, local services and small online stores, that covers the bulk of repetitive enquiries. Live chat and a shared inbox come with it, so a human can always jump in.

Where it falls short. The AI is shallower than Fin’s, complex multi-step conversations get clunky, and deep integrations (checking your job management system, for instance) are limited. AI conversations are also capped per plan, so heavy usage pushes you up tiers.

Verdict: the sensible default for most Australian SMBs. Start here, learn what customers actually ask, and upgrade only if you outgrow it.

Pricing models compared: what you actually pay

The sticker price matters less than the shape of the pricing. Here’s how the three models behave as you grow:

ModelHow it scalesPredictabilitySMB risk
Zendesk (per agent + per resolution)Costs grow with team size and ticket volumeModeratePaying for a full support suite you don’t need
Intercom Fin (per resolution + seats)Costs grow directly with AI-handled volumeLow–moderateBill shock in a busy month; cheap in a quiet one
Tidio (flat monthly + caps)Costs step up in tiers as volume growsHighHitting AI conversation caps and needing a higher plan

One more line item that catches people out: vendor subscriptions are separate from setup fees. The monthly charges above go to Zendesk, Intercom or Tidio. Getting the bot properly configured — FAQs written in your voice, handover rules set, integrations wired, edge cases tested — is a separate piece of work, whether you do it yourself or pay someone. Our chatbot recommendation and setup service covers exactly that: we help you pick the right platform, then configure it properly for $300–$1,000 as a one-off, typically done in 2–7 days. The subscription stays yours and goes straight to the vendor — no margin stacking on our side.

What these tools won’t do

Off-the-shelf bots share a ceiling, and it’s worth being honest about it:

  • They answer from content you give them. If your pricing, policies or service details aren’t written down clearly, no bot will answer well. This is also why a one-off professional chatbot configuration tends to matter more than which tool you pick.
  • Deep integration is limited. Checking live availability in your job management system, quoting from your rate card, or updating your CRM mid-conversation usually needs custom work.
  • Multi-channel gets patchy. Website chat is their home turf. WhatsApp, SMS and voice are either add-ons or not really supported at this tier.

If your enquiry volume is high, your questions need live business data to answer, or you want one bot across website, WhatsApp and Messenger, you’ve outgrown this category — that’s when a fixed-fee custom AI chatbot build from $6,500 starts to make sense, delivered in 3–5 weeks with the intents and FAQs from your off-the-shelf setup carrying over.

Which one should you pick?

Work through it in order:

  1. Already on Zendesk? Trial the Zendesk AI agent first. You’re paying for most of it already.
  2. Sales-led website chat, healthy margins, comfortable with usage-based pricing? Shortlist Intercom Fin — but model your monthly resolution volume first.
  3. Everyone else — most Australian SMBs — start with Tidio. Get it configured properly, learn what customers ask, and let real usage tell you when to upgrade.
  4. Outgrown all three? That’s custom-build territory, and it’s cheaper than most people assume.

Which option are you? If you’re genuinely torn between two rows of the table — or not sure what your monthly resolution volume would even look like — that’s exactly what our free 20-minute scoping call is for: we’ll tell you which platform we’d pick for your situation, and if the honest answer is “you don’t need a chatbot yet”, we’ll tell you that too.
